You, if you wished, your promise kept,
But never have you kept a promise.
So often, you with obsession of my yearnings by night came,
Between my eyelids and sleep, wakefulness reigned.
And if cruel to me, never am I to you,
Though torturing me, your dearness grows.
To you yielded hearing and with my heart listened,
In realm of love and faithful promise.
Retreated to myself, in solitude and dreams,
Saw beauty rare, without equal.
Since eyes threatened me, without shelter,
Their lashes end my patience.
Oh soul's relief, by you I am relieved not,
My heart endures the heat of love no more.
Memory's glow came to my mind, scaled,
Highest mountains, by breezes cooled.
Striving suspicion to assuage, I begged, you doubted,
Believed you drew close yet from me far away.
Poems I sent you of complaint,
Beloved, you from discourse turn.
The heat of your gaze I could not bear,
Your wondrous beauty dismayed me, your love is eternal.
